The Transfer Test

The two examination bodies are The Association Of Quality Education (AQE) and The Post Primary Transfer Consortium (PPTC or GL).

Learning Together provide practice tests and papers suitable for both AQE and GL Transfer Test Preparation.

This test is not set by the government and the above two examination bodies now run the Test. (This has replaced the government organised Eleven Plus Exam.) These tests are known by a variety of different names. The AQE Transfer Tests are often called the "Common Entrance Assessments (CEA)" while the PPTC tests are often referred to as the "GL Assessments NI."

The Transfer Test is an important exam and requires practice and preparation.

The Association Of Quality Education (AQE) set an exam which consists of 3 standard format papers which contain composite tests based on English and Mathematics questions. Learning Together offer 3 such practice tests which are written to closely resemble the actual tests themselves.

The GL Assessments take account of the learning programme and attainment targets of the Revised KS2 Curriculum for English and Mathematics. The questions will test the skills, aptitude and knowledge that all pupils will be developing at this Key Stage. There are separate English and maths papers and the questions are in multiple-choice format.

The Northern Ireland Transfer Test is held in the first term of a child's primary year 7 and there is only a very short period between starting year 7 in September and actually doing the tests. The Transfer Tests have content which is based on English and Mathematics as taught in all primary schools. (These tests are similar to the gramar school selection tests - the eleven plus exam - held in England.)

AQE TEST -

Common Entrance Assessment

The content to be covered is matched exactly to the Northern Ireland primary school curriculum.

English

Questions will assess the Reading and Writing sections of the Programme of Study for English (the key stage two curriculum.). The level of difficulty of the questions will not exceed Level 5.

Mathematics

The maths questions will alsol relate to the Key Stage 2 Programme of Study for mathematics. The questions will not be set beyond the level descriptions for Level 5.

Questions will assess the content detailed in the Attainment Targets: Number; Measures; Shape and Space; and Handling Data. As with the AQE test certain types of activity, such as discussion or practical activities, can not be included.

Processes in Mathematics covers the entire mathematics programme and relates to problem solving so questions challenging  Mathematical Reasoning may well be included in questions.

Using a calculator is not permitted.

All pupils studying the KS2 Curriculum in Northern Ireland should have covered the required content in school.

This document contains the full AQE assessment specification.

Post Primary Transfer Consortium

- GL Assessments NI

Currently 34 schools use the PPTC GL Assessment as part of their selection criteria. The PPTC Entrance Assessment consists of 2 papers, one in English and one paper in mathematics. The tests are in multiple choice format.

English Paper 1

Time: 50 minutes

English
The GL assessment may include the following, but the list is not exclusive: · Comprehension: literal and inferential interpretation of statements in passages.  Vocabulary: meanings of selected words in the context of a passage. · Spelling and Punctuation: proofreading skills in detecting mistakes in printed material. Study Skills: knowledge of book layout and methods of finding a reference.

Mathematics Paper 1

Time: 45 minutes

(Learning Together provide 3 maths practice tests in multiple choice format which are in a similar format as the real test. )

Mathematics
The questions are intended to reflect the curriculum; however a few challenging questions covering areas which may not be in the primary curriculum, such as elementary logic, are also included to assess intuitive understanding. Most questions have been written either to assess the understanding of mathematical concepts and processes, (problem solving) or to assess the use of mathematics as a skill in a range of everyday situations. Other questions will require recall of mathematical facts, properties or geometric names.

All the information about the Gl assessment is on their site.

The Learning Together  AQE and GL transfer test practice tests provide suitable preparation and revision material for year 6 or year 7 pupils.

You can find more information about the AQE test and details of the GL exam on their websites.
